Children’s Voice: A research model for youth voice

At CNS, we spent the first months of our research period developing a capabilities-based research model for our work with children and young people. The ‘Children’s Voice’ model supports young people in exploring how they define wellbeing – and what helps or hinders them to achieve it. 

It’s important that our model is fun, accessible and stimulating for our youth participants. The model aims to build relationships between youth participants, our Local Coordinators and our research team, by using creative activities and games. We then vote on priority wellbeing goals and explore these in intensive, small-group discussions.  

Our process is just as important to us as our findings. We aim to encourage young people to engage in critical thinking and decision making, and build collective solidarity and support. 

We spend a lot of time explaining the purpose of our research to schools and participants, so when we got the chance to develop and promote our research by commissioning an animation, we jumped at the funding opportunity. 

The following animation explains the purpose of our research to children aged 10-18 years. It expresses how important youth voice is in solving the problems of poverty, and gives a brief introduction to how we use the capabilities approach. We use it to promote and explain our research in schools and youth organisations.
